Imij & Co … The Caribbean Music Band
The Imij of Music
For a tiny nation, the twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is big when it comes to music – from calypso to classical; rock to reggae, one can find any genre of music to suit one’s taste. IMIJ & Co is one band that has taken full advantage of this wealth of music.
Describing IMIJ & Co as a “Caribbean music band” Joey Ng Wai, band leader and lead guitarist, says it’s his band’s goal to make music that appeals to everyone.
“Our music is high energy … cross-over, world music,” he explains. “We have a blend and we use all kinds of music – funk, rap, soca, calypso and rock.”
IMIJ & Co consists of 7 members, 3 musicians and 4 vocalists … Joey Ng Wai, lead guitarist and foundation member of the band; vocalists Kevon Carter, Rochelle Chedu and Malaika Ballantyne; and musicians Roger Campbell, drummer and Miguel Charles, bassist.
IMIJ & Co has had a very long history in the music business …. From its former days in the 1990s as Second IMIJ, the band established itself as a one-of-a kind soca act, delivering (now) classic hits like Jump On the Count of Four, Na Na, and Golo. Second IMIJ was one of the nation’s first bands to take soca music across the international border – from performances at the Water Festivals in Sweden and at the New York Apollo Theatre, to becoming annual fixtures in Carnival festivities around the Caribbean, including Jamaica’s Carnival and the Pirate’s Week in Grand Cayman.
In 2001, changes in the band’s make-up left the new group searching for a new name. This name would be the brainchild of Joey, who decided to use the decade-long fame of the Second IMIJ name, but with a twist that represented the new mechanics of the band. Thus, IMIJ & Co was born and the band has been a household name in soca and crossover music ever since.
With this new image, the band has forged forward, relishing every opportunity to perform their music to live audiences and taking soca across the Caribbean, and indeed across the globe. Traveling to countries from Barbados to Jamaica, Miami to Canada, and performing with international acts like Enrique Iglesias, Usher, UB40, and Barrington Levy.
Such was the band’s popularity and appeal, IMIJ & Co enjoyed the privilege of having their “image” printed on all Coca Cola 32oz bottles and cans throughout the Caribbean and South America by way of a promotion called “Rock ur Crib”. IMIJ & Co has also made it to the silver screen, and was featured in a Bollywood movie, Dulha Mil Gaya (I found a Groom), staring two of Bollywood’s biggest stars, Sushmita Sen and Fardeen Khan.
IMIJ & Co continues to prove itself as a Caribbean Music Power House, one that will leave you breathless and asking for more, routinely selling out shows around the world and being the main stay in the corporate market throughout the Caribbean.
IMIJ & Co delivers music and energy second to none.
